Eric Mathoho Early life
Mathoho was born in the village of Tshiombo, close to Thohoyandou. He has been involved in soccer since a young age. His toe nails were torn off when he kicked the ground, and his feet were bruised as a result of the games he played in the maize fields during harvest time, which he did in order to keep his feet from bruising.

Bloemfontein Celtic
Mathoho joined Bloemfontein Celtic from Limpopo-based Dolphins FC in July 2009, after going through trials with two other players under Owen da Gama in July 2009.
Under Clinton Larsen, Mathoho made his professional debut on 3 February 2010 in a 0–0 draw against Mamelodi Sundowns, for which he was named Man of the Match.
The 27th of February, 2011, saw him score his first goal in a 5–0 victory over Supersport United.
As a result of his outstanding performances in his first six months as a professional, he was linked with Maccabi Haifa and went on trial with FC Twente, but the €1 million deal never materialized.
Financial laws in the Netherlands required that foreign players receive a significant amount of compensation – a law intended to control the quality of players brought into the country – resulting in the deal collapsing. Mathoho was supposed to be a replacement for Douglas, who was leaving after being linked with both Juventus and Bayern Munich, but the deal fell through due to financial difficulties.

Mathoho joined Kaizer Chiefs in June 2012, after being linked with them since January, as well as Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, and was officially unveiled on 1 July 2012, after being linked with them since January.
Mathoho made his debut with Kaizer Chiefs on August 5, 2012, in a 4–1 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns, in which Chiefs were trailing by four goals by the 36th minute.
Mathoho suffered a shoulder dislocation during a match against Maritzburg United on September 13, 2012.
Against Maritzburg United on April 3, 2013, he scored his first goal in Chiefs colors, resulting in a 1–1 tie.
In his debut season, he won the league title and the Nedbank Cup, as well as the Nedbank Cup. Mathoho made his CAF Champions League debut on March 1, 2014, scoring a goal against Liga Muculmana in a 4–0 victory at Moses Mabhida Stadium on his 24th birthday. He was the youngest player to score in the competition. As a member of an MTN8 championship-winning team that went 19 games without conceding a goal, Mathoho was instrumental in the team’s success, which culminated in the league title in 2015.

Against Tanzania in an international friendly on May 14, 2011, he made his debut for the South African national team.
Mathoho was a key member of South Africa’s victorious AFCON qualification campaign in 2014 under Ephraim Mashaba, which saw the team qualify for the first time since 2008 for the first time in their history.
